AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP

Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands has been a grantee of AmeriCorps Seniors since 1993. As an Americorps Seniors grantee, ESCCI recieves funds through through their RSVP program, joining 750 other RSVP chapters across the country.

Today, we have over 400 volunteers serving on Cape Cod and the Islands in three key programs:

Each of our 60 Volunteer Stations use AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers to address a "critical local need" which has been identified through research and assessments. Volunteer Stations must provide potential volunteers with a Service Activity Description approved by the AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP office.

This volunteer opportunity description will outline the training and resources needed to perform the service, the length of time the service is expected to take each week, whether the service is long or short term, and, finally, what the measure of success will be. Twice a year AmeriCorps Seniors staff report to CNCS about the impact that our volunteers are making in the community.

Any person age fifty-five and older can become an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer. There are no minimum requirements for education or experience. At your initial interview, you will be asked to complete an application and to show proof of your identity in order for staff to conduct a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check. Also, at that time our volunteer coordinator will explore with you the types of volunteer experiences which might best suit your skills and interests.

After the CORI check is completed, you will be referred to one or more volunteer stations for a second interview. They may require an additional CORI check as we are prevented, by law, from sharing your information with other agencies.

New AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers may be asked to attend training at their volunteer station. Trainings are free of charge.

By joining AmeriCorps Seniors you are joining an elite group of experienced volunteers who are performing meaningful community service. You will know that the service you provide makes an impact on the community.

All of your service with AmeriCorps Seniors counts as part of the 4,000 hours of community service requested of each American over a lifetime.

All AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are covered by free accident and liability insurance while they are volunteering.

Elder Services also provides funding so that limited mileage reimbursement is available to volunteers. Plus there is an annual recognition event, and more local and specialized volunteer get-togethers throughout the year.

You will find over 500 members of AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers helping at dozens of non-profit agencies throughout the Cape and the Islands, including:

Volunteers deliver Meals on Wheels, drive patients to medical appointments, assist families in crisis, & visit the homebound. Other volunteers can be found testing homes for radon gas, leading osteoporosis prevention exercise classes, maintaining trails at the National Seashore and protecting endangered species.
